The printer paper is specific to the type of printer used. A thermal printer uses heat to produce the receipt images on heat sensitive paper. Dot-matrix printers, also known as impact printers, use pins and ink ribbon to print on regular paper. Finally, ink printer use ink cartridges like a computer printer. Most modern credit card machines use thermal printing.
The display shows information on the transaction and operation in use. The standard credit card machine shows two lines of text with twenty characters per line, but some can show up to four lines of text with twenty characters per line. You want a display that is clear and easy to read and understand. For the most visibility, try to find a display with a back light.
The keypad includes the number keys and the pound and star keys, just like on a touch tone phone. This is for manual keying and aids in completing some functions. The rest of the keys are called soft keys. These keys are used to perform specific functions like taking you to different parts of the menu and performing specific actions like batching and voiding.
