AVS and CVV2 Codes Part 2
There are many responses you will receive from the issuing bank depending on the information that was sent. From the AVS you will receive one of the following responses:
X- Full Match- Street Address and nine digit zip code both match
Y- Full Match- Street Address and five digit zip code both match
A- Partial Match- Street Address matches, but both nine digit and five digit zip code do not match
W- Partial Match- Street Address does not match, but nine digit zip code matches
Z- Partial Match- Street Address does not match, but five digit zip code matches
N- No Match- Street Address, nine digit zip code, and five digit zip code all do not match
U- System Unavailable- Address information unavailable. Returned if non-US. AVS in not available or if the AVS in a US bank is not functioning properly.
R- System Unavailable- Issuer’s system unavailable or timed out
E- Invalid- AVS data is invalid
S- Not Supported- U.S. issuing bank does not support AVS
The responses from CVV2 requests are as follows:
M- CVV2 Match
N- No CVV2 Match
P- Not processed
S- Issuer indicates that the CVV2 should be present on the card, but the merchant has indicated that data is not present on the card.
U- Issuer has not certified for CVV2 or issuer has not provided Visa with the CVV2 encryption keys
Empty- Transaction failed because wrong CVV2 number was entered or no CVV2 number was entered.
Unfortunately, a transaction can be approved even if the address verification system or the card verification does not match. The AVS and the CVV2 are designed to raise red flags only. It is up to the merchant whether or not the product should be shipped to the consumer. These codes however, are a stepping stone in making sure that your products are going to the correct customer and your business is safe from hefty chargeback fees.
