Address Verification System
If you do your business mainly on the Internet, or your products are shipped out to the consumer, you run the most risk of credit card fraud. If the card is not present, you have to put all your trust on the card holder giving you their information indirectly, by phone, mail, or Internet. Even though there are many measures taken to keep your business safe, there are still many hazards. Issuers even charge a greater transaction rate for card not present situations.
Credit card fraud is something that will never be eliminated, just as shoplifting will never go away no matter how many cameras a store has. All you can do is manage and use preventative methods and procedures to help your business without alienating your customers. Fortunately, the Address Verification System, or AVS.
AVS is available in the United States and four European countries. In the US AVS checks if the card-holders address and zip code matches the address filed at the credit card company. The Address Verification may even check other numbers in the address like the apartment number. For instance, if your address is 909 Main St. #304 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15122, AVS will check the numbers 909, 15122, and sometimes 304. When these numbers do not match, AVS will send a red flag to the merchant to implement more safeguards to be sure they do not get cheated.Once the numbers are approved, the merchant will receive a response to the AVS request as to the validity of the address. The AVS code will be displayed on your terminal screen.
AVS is designed to raise the level of comfort for the merchant before sending the customer their product. In addition to keeping you safe from fraud, it also saves you the hassle and expense from chargebacks.
