Accepting Debit Cards
Consumers today prefer to use debit cards over credit and checks. Debit cards eliminate the hassle of writing checks, and the danger of carrying large amounts of cash. In addition, it allows the consumer to keep better track of their spending because the card only has money the already have. In the current economy, consumer’s are not as willing to borrow money and take the chance of effecting their credit. Merchants also benefit from accepting debit. Debit card transactions are guaranteed. Also, debit payments are not susceptible to employee theft like cash is. Accepting debit cards assures you are tapping into every resource for your business. There are two ways to accept debit payments; offline and online.
Processing debit cards online is very similar to processing credit cards. The customer swipes their card through a credit card machine and signs the receipt. The receipts are then presented for settlement. If you decide to process debit offline, the card must have a Visa or MasterCard logo on it or the card will not be approved and you will not be able to process the card offline.
When you process a debit card online, it works very much like doing it online, only you will need to install a pin pad. After the customer swipes his/her card, they enter their pin in the pin pad instead of signing the receipt. The encrypted information is sent to the customer’s bank for authorization, and you receive the funds just as you would with a credit card transaction.
